Who is Gordon R. Clarke, C.S.B.?

Gordon R. Clarke, a son of Wisconsin, was introduced to Christian Science shortly after enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. After the war he graduated with a degree in music and worked briefly as a choir director in the University of Wisconsin system before becoming a full-time practitioner and then a teacher of Christian Science. He authored numerous articles on Christian Science for the church’s periodicals, and served as a public lecturer and speaker on the subject in the United States and abroad. Many of his students fondly remember first meeting him at his lectures, at which he greeted guests at the entrance door with a hearty handshake and broad smile. As a practitioner with a remarkable record of Christian Science healing, his teaching focused on preparing his students to follow his example, which he encouraged through greater knowledge of the scriptures and the life, works, and writings of Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy. While he allowed time for family and personal growth, learning pottery, tennis, photography, or playing the guitar, his focus was a seven days a week commitment to study, prayer, and practice in support of his patients, students, and others who crossed his path. His understanding of God as Soul was shown in a life brimming with joyfulness, humor, love for music and the arts, and a deep compassion for his fellow man.
